Nelle Stahura

The way Nelle Stahura sees it, there’s nothing like a little adversity to build character and bring people together. Case in point is one very memorable crew practice she and her RMU teammates shared. “We were just rowing along when the weight shifted. Suddenly we capsized, and ended up in the water,” Stahura says, adding, “At least we went in as a team.”

Unexpected challenges helped her forge alliances in the classroom, as well. In Advertising Communications Strategy, a group project brought with it the real-world pressure to develop a marketing strategy for a major radio station. The goal? To expand the station’s reach to an important demographic. Recalls Strahura, “Just like in crew, our group learned to pool our strengths—and we rallied to make a great presentation in front of the station’s executives.”

Stahura honed those presentation skills through a series of professional internships, and her gusto and poise eventually carried her to an interview with the ad firm McCann-Erikson Worldwide in New York City. “I love their accounts—especially Verizon and Master Card,” she says. “I want to work in advertising, and I want to learn from the best.”

So how would Stahura describe her four years at RMU, and an education focused on real-world opportunity, mentoring and marketable skills? That answer is easy: “Priceless.”

“I never dreamed I could do that kind of work or be that brave — until I came to Robert Morris.”

“At Robert Morris, they really do care about the students and they feel that individuals do matter. I’ve had classes with 11 people, so you really get to know your professors. The professors really go out of their way to make you feel involved.”

“So with that whole closeness, where I feel I can go and talk to my professors about career advice or anything, it’s just made the whole experience here that much more meaningful—and fun.”
