Success StoriesSugiery MonsacIf Sugiery Monsac stood out among the 650 RMU degree recipients at the 2007 commencement ceremony, it had more to do with her 200-watt smile and her exceptional height. Unlike most, maybe all, of her peers, the 6-foot-1-inch tall Sugiery had never attended a commencement before. "I was so busy with basketball, that graduation wasn't important to me in high school," she says. Sugiery began traveling the world as a member of the Dominican Republic National Team at 15. "But graduating from college is the proudest and most important moment in my life," she says. Sugiery helped the Colonials win the 2007 Northeast Conference Tournament and earn the program's first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. But she says her sports accomplishments pale in comparison to how RMU has helped her to develop as a person. "My coaches and my teachers gave me a chance to grow up and become more confident about who I am away from basketball," she says. "When I leave, I will remember the little things the most. Cooking my favorite dish from home: rice, beans and chicken for my teammates and friends, and laughing. That's the memory that will stay with me most." |
